In a new interview with Valor Econômico, our partner Ana Cláudia Utumi comments on how Value Added Tax (VAT) will affect services such as water bills and car rentals.
“It will be a new tax that will affect everyone, on something that is essential,” says Utumi. Today, she says, 9.25% of PIS and Cofins are levied on treated water and sewage collection services. But ICMS and ISS are not charged, she says. With the reform, these operations will be taxed by VAT. The vote by the deputies sought a reference rate of 26.5% for VAT, but there is still no official government calculation based on the new text.
